The rise of Influencers who shoot to fame by devoting their lives to Instagram is a remarkable story. The photo-sharing platform has made millionaires of many, but what about making a little more money on the side? Can it be done?

Instagram side hustles are a great way of earning extra cash, but you’ve got to know how to make it pay. We’ve put together a bunch of ideas that you can use as inspiration for your Instagram hustle, each of which can easily be run in your spare time.  Let’s get down to business!

1: Start Your Own Jewellery Business

Our first suggestion is one that can be surprisingly successful. Jewellery is always popular, and is a great one for an Instagram business. We reckon the best way to be successful with this idea is to find a niche in the jewellery market. Look for something different to the norm of perhaps go for a theme. You’ll find that people like and share jewellery pictures with others who have similar taste.

It doesn’t need to be expensive – in fact cheaper is better – but find a great supplier or, if you have the talent and ability, make it yourself. Look around for inspiration and you’ll find plenty of ideas that you can work with. Make payment easy by PayPal or through your direct messages, and you could soon build up a steady stream of repeat customers.

Start-up cost: You don’t need a website, just Instagram, and your only cost is the stock or materials. Give it some time and share your designs or items on Instagram and build up a following.

2: Begin a Logo Design Service

Instagram is all about pictures, so the budding artist in you can be put to work and monetised. Why logos? You’re starting a business, so how many other businesses are set up online every day? Thousands, and they all need a logo! But, of course, not all of those business owners are great logo designers. Logos are everywhere and they play a great part in establishing a brand.

You don’t need to be a great artist to get into graphic design, just someone with an inventive mind and a knack for knowing what works as a logo. Researching this part is easy: simply check out successful companies’ logos for ideas of what makes a logo great. One way to get your logo business exposure is to put your ideas out there for comments. Get into design communities and ask for reviews, and use that feedback to refine your designs. You want to become the go-to logo designer? Instagram is the ideal platform, and remember you can use PayPal to take payments easily.

Start-up cost: You’ll need a computer and a graphic design package – there are free software packages that we recommend you start with – and some time spent posting on design communities, and then get making logos and show them on Instagram.

3: Create a Sticker Selling Business

Another idea for the artists among us is to start a business selling stickers. Do people really buy stickers? Indeed they do, and in Japan there are stores dedicated to just selling stickers! But you can do it from home using Instagram, your laptop or PC, a design software package and your imagination. Try a theme to start with, perhaps something that appeals to certain groups of people. Look around on Instagram for some inspiration: we reckon simple stuff like cartoon cats, funny slogans to start with.

You will need to be OK at design work, but you don’t need to be a great artist. It’s about discovering what sort of stickers people will buy.  So do your research, ask for suggestions, and put your ideas on Instagram for people to review. This is a business that need only take up a bit of your spare time, yet it’s one that could pretty lucrative if you get it right, and you can take payment by PayPal safely and securely.

Start-up cost: A cheap business to start, assuming you already have the computer hardware, and a printer that can print on sticker stock. You need the plain stickers, some inventive ideas and a bit of creativity, and you’re ready to go.

4: Start a Food Business

Do you enjoy cooking? Perhaps you have a signature dish that your friends enjoy? Food businesses on Instagram exist already, we recommend you check a few out and see if there is a niche your cooking talent could fill. What sort of food could you sell? It could be hot food that you can pre-cook for re-heating – curry, chilli, stew or others – or you might want to bake cakes or biscuits.

We’re not talking a full-on catering business here, but a part-time hustle where you combine your talent and enjoyment of cooking and baking with making money through Instagram. Well-presented food always gets followers, you might want to think about making cakes for occasions, or specialising in one type of food. It doesn’t have to be a meal. Perhaps you make a sauce that everyone wants the recipe to? Don’t make too much in the early days or you might get stuck with unwanted stock, you can take payment via PayPal or direct messages.

Start-up cost: We’re guessing you already have an oven and the equipment you need to make your food, so all you need is the ingredients and some time to cook. Use Instagram to post pictures of you at work, people love to see what goes on!

5: Become a Product Reviewer

We’ve all seen the ads for product review services, but we’re talking something far more personal here. Instagram makes an ideal platform for you to become the authority in whatever products you use for your hobby or even your business. Do you enjoy fishing? Review fishing gear! You like custom cars? Review after-market parts. You could even review music, or guitars, or if you’re into photography, you can become the authority for cameras and accessories.

Instagram is a great platform for sharing and expanding your reach, which makes it ideal for product reviewers. The thing to aim for is to be trusted. If something has its faults, be honest and tell your audience this. But how does it make you money? You need to set up an affiliate program so that when you review a product and people buy it, you get a cut. It’s not as easy as some of the side hustles, but can bring in good money when it’s established.

Start up cost: If you have equipment already that you can begin reviewing, start with that. Build up your reputation and try your best to get known as the reviewer of choice, and talk to suppliers about possibly lending you items to review. Otherwise, this one could be costly if you have to buy the gear.

6: Start a Dropshipping Business

This is a popular type of business that could involve just about any sort of product. Dropshipping is where you supply a product but don’t handle it. When a customer orders from you, the manufacturer or merchant is automatically instructed to package and deliver. There are many advantages to this sort of e-commerce venture. One is that you can list as many items as you wish on Instagram, but you never have to carry stock. You can also see what sells and what doesn’t.

More effort is needed to build this sort of business into a successful one.  There are many people making a living from dropshipping products. There’s so much to choose from, so we recommend you start researching popular products and also looking for what industry pundits reckon will be the next cool gadget, toy or product. Instagram adverts are the best way to get a dropshipping business out there to your audience, and there are plenty of suppliers to choose from.

Start up cost: The only cost with this option is your time. You don’t have to buy anything before you sell, you simply source a supplier and take it from there. A load of Instagram ads is the way to go, so start researching products now and see what you can find.

7: Run a Pet Personality Business

Our final suggestion is a wacky one, but we reckon you’ll see the merits of a pet personality business. What do we mean?  People love cute animals, and they love animals doing funny things. So, get your dog, cat, even your fish and make them an Instagram page. Then start posting pictures and videos of your animal with witty captions, or even get your dog to do product reviews of pet products.

So, where does the money come from? Believe it or not pets have formed the foundation of many an influencer’s business. All you need is a cute animal, some inventive ideas and a camera and you’re away. Once you get a following, you’ll find that pet products manufacturers want to partner with you, and you benefit from freebies!

Start up cost: As long as you already have a pet make them work for you! All you need are your ideas, your adorable pet, and you’re ready to go with one of the best Instagram business ideas of all.
