Instagram has become a must for marketing, a tool that every business should be using. With a broad reach and general appeal across the ages, it is the social media platform of choice for marketers. But did you know there are three distinct types of Instagram account profile?

Recognising that what began as a simple photo sharing platform has become a business tool, Instagram now offers Personal, Creator and Business account profiles. What’s the difference? In the following article you’ll find a description of each, advice as to who each account type is relevant, and the pros and cons of all three. We’ll start with the basic personal account.

Instagram Personal Account

The Personal account is more than likely the one you signed up to Instagram for. It is simple and uncomplicated – which is a major draw for Instagram users – and keeps features to  minimum.

Who is it For?

This type of account if for the user who wants to share fun pictures with their friends and family. The user is not interested in monetizing their content, and is not promoting a business on Instagram. This is the account you populate with, for example, pictures of your pets. Indeed, many people’s pets have their own personal Instagram account! Easy to use and versatile enough for the purpose, think of the Personal profile as the basic Instagram account.

Pros and Cons

The pros of the Personal profile include:

  • A Personal Instagram profile can be set as either public or private.
  • It comes with all of the basic features you may wish to use including the Feed, Stories and IGTV functions.
  • This profile can be linked to as many Facebook pages as you wish, or can be linked to none.
  • Verification can be requested if the profile is set to public.

Cons are as follows:

  • Limited to the basic features only.
  • A Personal profile cannot be monetized.
  • No contact details are involved.
  • This account does not include analytics or insights.

Instagram Creator Account

The Creator profile is the latest addition to Instagram. Offering a greater range of features than the Personal account, it sits between the Personal and Business profiles and is of interest to a variety of types of user.

Who is it For?

The features of the Creator account make it ideal for Influencers, for example, and for persons in the public eye. It is also used by anyone who creates content either for personal or business publication. This type of account appeals to those who want to engender influencer-brand relationships, and enhances the transparency of Instagram marketing. You know that a user with a Creator account is not simply there for fun.

Pros and Cons

The pros of the Creator account are many and include:

  • All the features that are included in a Personal account are here.
  • Insights and analytics about the account can be called upon, with performance relating to content, audience and activity clearly displayed.
  • The look of the profile can be adapted to appear as a business-like one, or can remain the same as the Personal.
  • Contact details can be displayed as can a category label.
  • The Creator account can be linked with a Facebook Page.
  • Users can manage and create promotions.
  • Users with more than 10,000 followers may add links to Instagram Stories.
  • Verification can be requested.
  • Direct message and quick reply functions allow easier communication with followers.
  • There is a Creator Studio on the desktop.
  • Access to branded content tools is available.

Cons of the Creator profile include:

  • Cannot be set to private.
  • May only be linked to one Facebook page.

Instagram Business Account

The Instagram Business account takes the Creator profile a step further. This sort of profile looks professional and gives the image you require for promoting your brand on Instagram. The full range of features included is impressive and it’s worth researching further for use as a business promotion tool.

Who is it For?

This is the account for the business owner or manager who wants to use Instagram to promote a business to a wide audience. It allows for branding and is the only profile that permits ads and promotions on Instagram. It is also used by businesses working with content creators and with influencers.

Pros and Cons

The pros of the Instagram Business profile are as follows:

  • All the features that are included in a Personal account are here.
  • Insights and analytics about the account can be called upon, with performance relating to content, audience and activity clearly displayed.
  • This type of profile allows the user to run ads.
  • Contact and business details can be displayed as can a category label.
  • Access is provided to Instagram shopping and posts can be tagged.
  • The Business account can be linked with a Facebook Page.
  • Users can manage and create promotions.
  • Users with more than 10,000 followers may add links to Instagram Stories.
  • Verification can be requested.
  • Direct message and quick reply functions allow easier communication with followers.
  • Video chat is enabled.
  • Use of the Creator Studio on the desktop is enabled.
  • Access to branded content tools is available.

Cons of the Business profile include:

  • Cannot be set to private.
  • Must be linked to a Facebook page to operate.
  • Can only be linked to a single Facebook page.

These guidelines on accounts should give you a good idea of the differences between the Personal, Creator and Business profiles available on Instagram. Remember to not choose the personal account if you are looking to monetize content, work with an influencer or promote a business.

Instagram remains a powerful marketing tool that enables businesses of all kinds to improve brand awareness, social trust, and enhance your business in the market.
